BOTRY-Zen®
BOTRY-Zen® is a biological control agent developed specifically for the control of Botrytis cinerea in grapes, blackcurrants, kiwifruit and ornamental flowers and for Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in kiwifruit. BOTRY-Zen® is certified organic by BioGro NZ (No. 4405).
The active ingredient in BOTRY-Zen® is a naturally occurring saprophytic fungus, called Ulocladium oudemansii. This means that in the wild it grows on and colonises, dead and decaying plant material. It is this important characteristic that makes it ideal for targeting decaying and damaged plant tissue that is also the same food source for Botrytis/Sclerotinia. By excluding Botrytis/Sclerotinia from these sites of early disease development within the crop, BOTRY-Zen® works naturally and out-competes the disease for the same ecological niche.
BOTRY-Zen® is non-invasive and causes no damage to live plant tissue. With this mechanism of action it is highly unlikely that resistance to BOTRY-Zen® will develop.
Trial Data
BOTRY-Zen® has been extensively trialled in New Zealand since 1997 in wine grapes, kiwifruit, blackcurrants and ornamentals. Trials in wine grapes have also been conducted in the United States, France, Germany, Slovakia and Spain. The results of these trials show that when BOTRY-Zen® is applied correctly, it provides protection against Botrytis/Sclerotinia infections comparable to a standard fungicide programme.
BOTRY-Zen® has recently been included in the product testing programme carried out by Kiwi Vine Health in their bid to control Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa).
Application/Use
BOTRY-Zen® is applied through standard spray equipment. As with any spray application, coverage and timing are vital in obtaining a good result. BOTRY-Zen® can be tank-mixed with a number of fungicides, refer to the list of compatible products or contact our technical team for further information.
Refer to the best practice information (grapes, kiwifruit, blackcurrants and paeonies) for individual crops for application timing and rate.

BOTRY-Zen® Bio-Gro CertificateARMOUR-Zen®
ARMOUR-Zen® is a natural product specifically developed for the control of Botrytis cinerea in wine grapes and ornamentals and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in ornamentals.
ARMOUR-Zen® contains a naturally abundant polysaccharide called chitosan. Different chitosan-based formulations will have different biological properties depending upon their source material and their manufacturing conditions, that is to say, not all chitosans are the same. Two different sources of chitosan were specifically selected for ARMOUR-Zen® because of their activity against Botrytis. ARMOUR-Zen® has been formulated as a water-soluble concentrate which is easily diluted for spray application.
A recent study in the scientific journal "Plant Pathology” (October 2010) shows that ARMOUR-Zen® offers dual modes of action against Botrytis. Firstly, ARMOUR-Zen® is antifungal and prevents spore germination and also causes existing mycelia to shrivel and lose their structural integrity. Secondly, ARMOUR-Zen® triggers natural defences in plant tissues and renders them more resistant to Botrytis.
Furthermore, field studies indicate that ARMOUR-Zen® has the added benefit of reducing sour rot in wine grapes. There is no withholding period for ARMOUR-Zen® because it is readily broken down in the environment and will leave no detectable residues.
Trial Data
ARMOUR-Zen® has been extensively trialled for use in wine grapes from bunch-closure through to harvest.
ARMOUR-Zen® is included in the product testing programme which is being carried out by Kiwi Vine Health in their bid to control Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa).
Application/Use
ARMOUR-Zen® is applied through standard spray equipment. As with any spray application, coverage and timing are vital in obtaining a good result. ARMOUR-Zen® should not be applied at the same time as biological control products. Contact our technical team for further information.
Refer to the best practice information (grapes) for individual crops for application timing and rate.
