MIDI-Zen®
Overview

In 2005 a joint venture was established between Plant and Food Research, NZ Winegrowers and Botryzen Ltd, to develop a natural product replacement for current chemical fungicide botrytis control. The product development focused on the critical mid season period of grape development. This period is defined as from pea size berries to veraison. Over 3 seasons of laboratory and field trials it was established that MIDI-Zen® mid season control of botrytis rivaled that of current fungicides.

MIDI-Zen® is a non-systemic, protectant-type product, which can only provide disease protection if the grape berry surface is covered with MIDI-Zen®. Therefore sufficient leaf plucking to expose the grape bunches will allow spray penetration through to the target area. This is even more necessary where the standard practice of a denser canopy management is used, like with the variety of Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough

MIDI-Zen® is presented as a concentrated liquid and is applied at 15 L / ha, and a water rate of 500 litres per hectare. A season’s programme would include 2 – 3 applications of MIDI-Zen® mid season.

The mode of action is antifungal, also stopping latent infection (as with Switch® but not systemic).  This differs from our other products with BOTRY-Zen® being a purely niche competitor and to ARMOUR-Zen® which is fungistatic. MIDI-Zen® also has activity against powdery mildew and could replace applications of Captan through the mid-season. MIDI-Zen® reduces the latent infections as well as killing any Botrytis spores that are within the bunch at pre-bunch closure.  Trials show that this programme is as effective as a full-season fungicide programme even in high pressure seasons.

Trial Data

MIDI-Zen® has been tested over several seasons in wine grapes and has dual control over the diseases Botrytis and Powdery Mildew.

Application

In wine grapes, MIDI-Zen® is applied through the mid-season from pre-bunch closure to veraison.

MIDI-Zen® fits well with our current products in an IPM programme; however it can also be used by itself as a dual control application, or as an application against powdery mildew. Besides grapes there have been recent trials on roses and tomatoes.
